Stab wounds tend to be inflicted deliberately and differ from punctures in their size and shape. Stab wounds are often inflicted by implements with both sharp edges and points, leading to a deep downward wound with badly cut edges.

Embedded object or foreign body, in this case, a shard of glass. A complex injury and one that leads to an obvious, but misguided immediate treatment. Initial reactions are to remove embedded objects, but this may exacerbate existing trauma; foreign objects can also serve a purpose in plugging severed blood vessels and thusly removal can lead to sudden, unexpected and significant blood loss.

Abrasion, a removal of the epidermis, usually with significant but rarely dangerous bleeding from the capillaries. Common in pedestrian v vehicle RTAs and sporting injuries, foreign material (soil, grit, vegetation) is often present, as seen here.

Puncture wound, such as from a needle, spike or tooth. Minimal bloodloss, but can be deeper than supposed. Infective material is often carried on the instrument to the base of the hole, complicating an otherwise simple injury.

Gunshot entry wound. Minimal tissue damage at this point, with less blood loss than is usually supposed. The wound adopts the shape of the projectile exactly. Dark 'scratchings' are visible near the top, showing localised powder burns, due to the muzzle of the gun being placed against the skin at the time of shooting.

Gunshot exit wound, significantly larger than the actual projectile, this wound shows the shape of the force exerted by the bullet as it moves through the body. Significant tissue loss is present and bone fragments are clearly visible.

Laceration, a ripping of the wound edges, such as would be found when cutting yourself on barbed wire or jagged metal.

The incision, a nice, clean edged cut, such as from a razor

Free to bleed on people.

This is what it looks like when you've just been told you're not terminally ill. It's a good look, I think. That's half of the parents, over on the right.
